If you want to get the story straight, you need to talk to the source. God, in His great love for us, has provided a way for us to be right with Him. That's the best news we could ever hear! So here's that Good News, the Gospel, in His own words:

If you would enter life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17b). You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself (Matthew 19:18b-19). You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Matthew 22:37). Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer (1 John 3:15a). Everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28b). For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it (James 2:10).

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness (I John 3:4). If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (I John 1:8). For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). None is righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10b). For the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23a). But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death (Revelation 21:8).

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse . . . Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us (Galatians 3:10a; 3:13a). For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3b-4). The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15b).

It’s simple: God is holy and just. That means He must punish sin. Because we have all broken God’s Law, we are sinners who deserve God’s wrath. God’s punishment for sin is eternal death in Hell. But because He loves you, He became a Man—Jesus-- and died on the Cross to be punished instead of you. Then, Jesus was buried and rose again alive into Heaven! To receive this gift of eternal life, you must repent (turn from your sin) and trust in Jesus’ sacrifice to save you from God’s wrath against your sin.
