Number My Days

Compared to eternity, life is but a drop in the bucket! Therefore, the psalmist says,

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

To number our days means to constantly keep before us the fact that we all must face death. The wise person is prepared for death. Jesus told a story about a man who lost sight of this truth.

The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, "What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?" And he said, "I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.'" But God said to him, "Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?" So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:16-21

We, like the rich man, often get so caught up in this life that we spend little time on things that will last for eternity. God called this man a fool for spending so much effort building a comfortable life, but neglecting to lay up treasure in heaven.

The first step in being prepared for eternity is to make sure you are right with God. If you die in your sin apart from Christ, you will face the wrath of God for all eternity. Click here to learn how to be right with God.

Whoever believes in the Son [Jesus Christ] has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. John 3:36

If you are in Christ, then you should spend your life storing up treasure in heaven. How do you know if you're storing up treasure in heaven? Jesus said,

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" Matthew 6:21.

If your heart's desire is toward heavenly things, then you are storing up treasure in heaven. If your heart's desire is toward earthly things, then you are storing up treasure on earth. You will prove your heart's desire by your actions. Are you spending your time, talents, and money on advancing the kingdom of heaven?
