How Are People Like Fish?

Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a fisherman trawling for fish with a giant net. Matthew 13:47-50 says:

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The question is, "Who are the evil and who are the righteous?" According to Romans 3:10, There is none righteous, no not one. Jesus said, "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Whoa! That's an impossible standard for all of us. The good news is that we can be made righteous by Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, For our sake [God] made [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

God can make you righteous because Jesus, God in the flesh, paid the fine for your sin. He died in the place of guilty sinners, was buried, and rose again. You must ask God for mercy, trusting in Jesus and turning from your sin. Once you do this, God promises that you'll become a new person who now desires to do God's will. You can find God's will by reading the Bible and praying to God for insight!

It’s simple: God is holy and just. That means He must punish sin. Because we have all broken God’s Law, we are sinners who deserve God’s wrath. God’s punishment for sin is eternal death in Hell. But because He loves you, He became a Man—Jesus-- and died on the Cross to be punished instead of you. Then, Jesus was buried and rose again alive into Heaven! To receive this gift of eternal life, you must repent (turn from your sin) and trust in Jesus’ sacrifice to save you from God’s wrath against your sin.
