You step into the ice-cold water. You wonder whether you really want to do this as the water rises about you. You strap on your goggles and take a peek underwater. This is going to be worth it. You ready yourself for the icy plunge over the ledge. Whoosh! Arms and legs pumping, you look down, down, down, into the deep water. Everything is completely silent. Fish swim lazily beneath you, snapping up bugs and other morsels. It’s like a whole new world of fish and rocks and bubbles. At this point you begin to shiver and shake with the cold. You crawl out into the sun and it’s a long time before you begin to warm up . . .
We got to snorkel the Peabody River in New Hampshire this week. We saw many rainbow trout and one brook trout. I wished I had my fly rod down there! We did try hand-lining, which didn’t quite yield success. So that was the Peabody River!
Hand-lining--exactly what it sounds like.
